North shows 18-19 and significantly not four spades. Therefore south with bad spades has an easy choice to continue with diamonds as trumps.
As usual 4 ♣ is mandatory and north can go past 4 ♦ with a good hand. Stopping on 4 ♦ is good for another reason. Without a heart control we would like to make it easy for south to cue hearts and then the north hand is suitable for taking control.
Opposite three key cards, north can see that the grand needs south to have five diamonds, the ♣ J, the ♠ QJ, or the ♥ K and there is some play without any of those cards. This is enough to justify trying the grand.
